An exchange and photo exhibition project under the topic of Urban Life at a River

Concept:

The cities of Cologne and Kyoto, both being associated by a town partnership for 50 years now, have many aspects in common. Especially distinctive are their rivers that fragment the cities from North to South. The Rhine in Cologne and the Kamo-gawa in Kyoto have always been lifeline, way of transport, food source and recreation resort for the continuously growing urban community.

How does urban life at and with a river in a megacity function today?
Where exactly do water, city with its history and people meet?

These are just some of the questions the photographers refer to in their respective works.

Photographer Frank Dünzl from Cologne visited Kyoto in May 2013 for 4 weeks. In return, photographer Rui Mizuki from Kyoto came to Cologne in May/June for also 4 weeks.

Both photographers attended to the topic in their own personal way.

It is the view of a person from another cultural background, unfamiliar with the local situation that the project is aiming at. The view on urban life in the respective cities.

The results of the project were on display to the public in an exhibition from 6 - 27 October 2013.

The exhibition was part of the official events celebrating the anniversary year and is conducted in close cooperation with the City of Cologne.
